Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a near face-on spiral galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +15 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11.3 galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a Milky Way like diameter of 110,000 light years.

This obscure object is only 2 degrees northwest of the famous Leo Triplet.

From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 10 degrees off of face-on.

The disk structure of this galaxy is fascinating.  A bright unbarred core is surrounded by a lens-like yellow inner region.  The bright middle region is hexagon-shaped, with 2 bright arms studded with star clouds.  These 2 arms quickly break down into flocculent wide plumes.  The outer region, faintly visible, shows four regions - top, bottom, left and right.  The disk appears disturbed but still retains overall symmetry.  No obvious disturbance candidates are visible.
