Description

Our third deep sky target, a cluster of galaxies Hickson 44,  imaged from the remote observatory in Portugal by the AstroDarkTeam  composed of Stéphane Rolland and Pascal Gouraud.
Image processing was a bit touchy and this image is strongly cropped  (X3 approximately).
Some bad reflections on the snap cap, polluted our raw images on the 4 LRGB layers (reflections on the flat panel and protective cap at the entrance of our scope.
The true color image (HaLRGB) consists of images taken on the luminance, red, green and blue layers with also some images in Ha (ionized hydrogen). Total of 16 hours of stacked exposures including 3H45 in Luminance, 3H45 in Ha, and 8H30 in RGB.Thanks again to the French Astro ARO team for the efficient and effective management of this superb site that hosts us.
A bit of history and science...
HICKSON catalog lists a hundred clusters of galaxies which are relatively close to each other to generate some interactions sometimes resulting in deformations in these galaxies. Some of these galaxies could gradually merge in one big galaxy.
Hickson 44 is a group of 4 galaxies located about 80 million light years away:
- NGC 3187 with a blue color is a very original S-shaped barred spiral galaxy
- NGC 3185 and NGC3190 are spiral galaxies like our Milky Way (in the middle of the image, with a nice dark orange band and at the bottom left)
- NGC 3193 is an elliptical galaxy (at the very top of the image with a yellow color)
