Description

This was taken on one of those nights when everything went wrong! In fact, I have had two nights like this recently - details to follow about that occasion, with my next posting... Anyway, I was trying to take SH2-216 - the second closest planetary nebula and its region - with the Rasa - and then the mist came down. The dew was also unbearable, and impossible to defeat, and it played havoc not just with Sh2-216, but with this posting too, i.e. the NGC 884 widefield image herein. It was so bad that I shut the big scope down because it was just pointless. But then, would you Adam and Eve it...? Half an hour later it cleared and gave me a sky that was about as clear as I ever get here! GRRR! Too late, I could not be bothered to set up the Rasa again - too tired and too dewy anyway.

I know I get a reasonable number of clear nights here, although truthfully I do take a lot of objects all on one night, but not at the moment! The weather is not great, so I will have to wait for another occasion, hopefully with no moon too - which is what SH2-216 needs. It may be some time.

In the meantime, on the night itself, I was still battling away with the widefield of NGC 884, and finally after a lot of dew issues and problems associated with that, I managed to get some half decent data - the green filter was the worse set by far. It is not often I use my RGB filters with the mono, but it helped here because I got more SNR quickly by doing so, on what was a tricky night. Hope you liked the story... This is my first RGB of the heart nebula, and I knew that I could fit NGC 884 in the FOV too - so I am hoping the image gives a different flavour to a well known area and its famous objects, that are normally taken separately - the heart generally being done as narrowband. Cheers everyone. Simon
