Description

Sh2-86 Emission Nebula

7.1 hr HaLRGB

The radiation of the very young star cluster NGC6823 erodes the surrounding emission nebula Sh2-86, exposing pillars of cold molecular clouds. These clouds very likely contain even younger, newly-born stars, still hidden by the enveloping dust. Dark globules of gas and dust are also visible in this infrequently-imaged nebula, similar to those in the Eagle (M16) or Lagoon (M8) nebulae. NGC6820 is the small yellowish nebula below and to the right of NGC6823 (North is up). Sh2-86 lies about 6000 light years away and is 50 light years across.
