Description

Most of us recognize this structure as Sh2-157 The Lobster Claw Nebula. An enormous creature with "claws" reaching toward the famous Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) as if to claim the beautiful jewel for a prize. These "claws" are actually intricate rings carved out of the surrounding nebulosity by emissions from a powerful Wolf-Rayet Star identified as WR157. Wolf-Rayet stars are often associated with spectacular Oiii bubbles formed around them. In other cases like this the result can be much different but equally amazing. This entire nebula spans ~215 light years to give an idea of the size of these rings formed by WR157.

This area is very strong in both Ha and Sii emissions. I have always found it difficult to show much contrast between these emissions in similar areas with my images. During processing I attempted to create some additional contrast between the Ha and Sii using my own custom Pixel Math combinations. A close approximation would be a Foraxx type combination of the Sii and Oiii data with the Ha data added as a luminance layer.
