Description

A rare image from central Florida during the summer.  I found a couple more hours to at least get a decent NB image.

Interesting facts about Messier 17 (NGC6618):
  • Has a plethora of nicknames: Omega, Swan, Checkmark, Lobster, and Horseshoe nebula
  • Some 6,000 light years from Earth, it spans some 15 light-years in diameter.
  • The cloud of interstellar matter, of which this nebula is a part of, is roughly 40 light-years in diameter and has a mass of 30,000 solar masses.
  • The total mass of M17 is estimated to be 800 solar masses.
  • It is considered one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions of our galaxy.
