Description

Strottner-Drechsler 138 is an extremely faint potential planetary nebula, discovered by our team almost exactly one year ago.
It is located in the constellation Perseus, has a size of 13 x 9.5 arc minutes and a distance of about 3100 light years from Earth.

The shape of StDr 138 corresponds to that of a classical bipolar planetary nebula.
The central torus is particularly prominent. North and south the typical arcs of bipolar planetary nebulae extend.
Structures like these form when a second star at the center disturbs or influences the formation of a planetary nebula.

This photo was taken by our friend and colleague Nicolas Outters and it is the second photo ever taken of this object.
The image processing was done by me.
