Description

NGC 2371 is a dual lobed planetary nebula at a distance of 4,400 light years in Gemini. It was given 2 NGC numbers perhaps because it can appear as 2 separate halves in an eyepiece.

There are 2 jets of material moving away from the central star that are 180 degrees from each other in the image, created by radiation interacting with the expanding cloud of material around the star. Astronomers believe these jets match the rotational axis of the central star, and that this axis has moved over the last thousand years perhaps due to a companion star. The hubble image of these jets is below:
The_Death_of_a_Star_NGC_2371.tif.jpg
The central part of the nebula measures 1 light year across, for those who have wondered what a light year looks like from a distance of 4,400 light years.

This object showed the most detail in OIII as expected. The SII channel yielded only the 2 jets above.

The full size image shows these jets clearly (for a C11 ).
