Description

Panoramic mosaic of the Southern Winter Milky Way over the South African bush.

Images of the beautiful African sky taken 18:30-19:00 local time, 8 August 2015 at Pondoro Lodge on the Oliphants River, Balule Nature Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa

Photos of the sky taken with one hand on the remote trigger or tripod while the other hand shined a flashlight on the bush to make sure that the lions and other critters didn't wonder into the picture (and the photographer). A tracker (for animals) stood by about half the time so I could focus more completely on taking the images.

Coal Sack and Crux are on the right (Alpha Centauri above), the panorama extends ~235 degrees from almost the West at the right edge (260 deg azimuth) to the NNE on left edge (25 deg), but is centered mostly on the East and Southeast. Extends from Carina at the horizon on the right through Scorpius (overhead) to Sagitta near the horizon at the left (NE). The Magellanic Clouds are not visible as they were low and behind the trees on the right.
