Description

The dominant galaxies in this field are the elliptical galaxy NCC 6876 and the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6872 of type SB(s)b peculiar. NGC6872 is 212 million light-years away and is approximately five billion years old. It is interacting with the lenticular galaxy IC 4970 slightly to the right, which is less than one twelfth as large. The two elongated arms of NGC 6872 measure 522,000 light-years from tip to ti[p, making it one of the largest-known spiral galaxies. It was discovered on 27 June 1835 by John Herschel.
