      Description

NGC 2442, commonly known as the Meathook Galaxy is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Volans. It was discovered by Sir John Herschel on December 23, 1834. The visible disk and spiral arms of NGC 2442 span about 150,000 light years. The asymmetric structure of NGC 2442 with its strong drawn out northern arm on the right and the weaker, more loosely defined southern arm hint at a past tidal interaction with another galaxy.
