Description

I had to abort this image. Part way through collecting the data my Atik filter wheel decided to remind me why I stopped using it. It does not like the cold, and cannot reach the target filter when it tries to switch. I wanted to put my refractor back out anyway, so I cut this one short for now. I might try again with more focal length in the future.

This little ring is called WeBo 1, or PN G135.6+01.0. It is a planetary nebula surrounding a cool young Barium star. I am curious why the standard plate solving does not highlight it.

Anyone who has imaged the Heart Nebula probably has a picture of it. It is close to the Heart Nebula, just to the east (see version F of the image).

The unique thing about this PN is that is has a ring like structure as opposed to the usual sphere. The outer boundary of the ring is bright in Ha, and the core shines in OIII. It does not appear much at all in SII. The OIII is rather 'sloppy'. It extends out past the Ha ring giving the PN a fuzzy appearance in my C8.

For comparison, here is a great image on AstroBin taken through a telescope with 3x the aperture of my C8:

The central star is a binary system, with the companion star being an invisible white dwarf. The action between the 2 stars is thought to be responsible for the ring like Ha structure.
