Description

The Flaming Star (the one with the purple hue) is actually a runaway star from the constellation Orion. Long ago, this star was part of a stellar collision that ejected it from its home in Orion. It is now a transient visitor to the constellation Auriga (fairly close to the North Star). The red gas in this image is ionized hydrogen from close proximity to the star. The purple hue around the flaming star is caused from dust reflecting the starlight. This nebula is 1,500 light years distant and spans approximately 4 light years across.
