Description

The Astronomy Picture of the Day for January 17, 2009, features a dusty emission nebula called IC 410, located about 12,000 light-years away in the constellation Auriga. The nebula is over 100 light-years across and has been sculpted by stellar winds and radiation from an embedded open star cluster. The bright cluster stars are visible below a prominent dark dust cloud, and there are two dense streamers of material near the nebula's central regions, potentially sites of ongoing star formation. The image is a false-color composite showing emission from sulfur atoms in red, hydrogen atoms in green, and oxygen in blue.
