Description

I wanted my first attempt at capturing a galaxy to be the famous Andromeda Galaxy. I spent quite a few nights over the past 2 months gathering data on near moonless nights, and this is my longest project to date, 41.5 hrs of total data collected. For processing, I utilized Pixinsight's WBPP to process the data into master LRGB Ha frames. I used BlurXterminator for deconvolution, and gradiantXterminator for gradient removal. Additionally, I used SPCC for color correction. I integrated the R and Ha frames for the R channel and combined LRGBHa into a super luminescence frame. Next, I processed the HaRGB combined frame and Super Lum frame separately before combination, which consisted of stretching, HDRMT, and masks on the L frame to preserve color and the nucleus.  Lastly, after the LRGB was combined I masked the galaxy and did an image blend of a soft light version of the image to bring out more contrast in the outer spiral arms.

Overall, this was a bit more of a complex approach to processing than I have done in the past and I am super pleased with the results.

Greek History of Andromeda:

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was a princess whose parents, king Cepheus and queen Cassiopeia, chained her to a rock as a sacrifice to appease the sea-god Poseidon, who took exception to Cassiopeia’s boast that her daughter was more beautiful than the sea nymphs (Nereids) who often accompanied him. Their sacrifice was intended to stop Poseidon from destroying the city of Aethiopia where they reigned, but Andromeda was saved at the last moment by the hero Perseus riding on the winged horse Pegasus.
