Description

Note - An updated image of this object is seen here.

*****************************************

This object is a supergiant elliptical galaxy located an astounding 300 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. This distance from us is about 5 times that of the furthest Messier object. The galaxy is massive, spanning a diameter of over twice that of the Milky Way.

The galaxy is centered in the image within the Coma Cluster of over 1000 galaxies. The cluster contains many fascinating galaxies, such as the beautiful barred galaxy (NGC 4907) on the left lower edge, several pairs of interacting galaxies (such as NGC 4898), the large bluish spiral galaxy to the lower left (IC 4040), and the intriguing group of galaxies to the upper right (surrounding and spiraling out from the other huge elliptical galaxy, NGC 4874).
