Description

Sh2-140, also known as the "Seagull Nebula," is a star-forming region located in the constellation Canis Major. Here are some interesting facts about Sh2-140:
  • Sh2-140 is also known as Sharpless 140, named after American astronomer Stewart Sharpless who cataloged it in 1959.
  • Located about 3,800 light-years from Earth.
  • A huge cloud of gas and dust, stretching across more than 100 light-years.
  • Illuminated by the light of several hot, young stars that are forming within it.
  • Discovered by the British astronomer Sir William Herschel in 1784.
  • The Seagull Nebula gets its name from its shape, which resembles a seagull in flight when viewed from Earth.
  • Contains a number of interesting objects, including a dense molecular cloud, a dark nebula, and several bright, young stars.
  • Part of a larger star-forming complex known as the Canis Major OB1 association.
  • Thought to be relatively young, with estimates suggesting that it is between 1 and 5 million years old.
