Description

The Campo Imperatore Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical observation center founded in 1965 as part of the Astronomical Observatory of Rome on the plateau of the same name at 2200 m a.s.l. and still used today for scientific research and dissemination. The main instrument of the observatory is the AZT-24, a 108 cm diameter Ritchey-Chrétien reflector built for the Pulkovo Observatory but transferred to Italy in 1995 and placed on the Gran Sasso in 1997. The telescope is equipped with the infrared camera (1.1-2.5 μm) SWIRCAM, supplied by the Teramo observatory, and involved in the SWIRT project on the search for extragalactic supernovae, in which Russia also collaborates. This telescope is the only infrared telescope present in Italy.
