Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a faint blue reflection nebula located 6000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -17 degrees.   It is about 1 degree north of M24.

At 6000 light years away, this object is one of the furthest of the vdB nebulae.

vdB 117 spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 4 light years.

This nebula appears asymmetric around the 9.1 magnitude bluish source star HD 167143.  Like many of these end-of-catalog vdB objects, this one is rated a 0 on the imaging scale (0 to 5) of my Compendium.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude. My complete Astrobin vdB Collection is here.
