Description

These objects are emission nebulae and star clusters located 8000 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +34 degrees. IC 417 is on the right and NGC 1931 is on the left, both lying in a rich star field.

Each object consists of an open star cluster energizing the gas nebula around it, with IC417 containing the star cluster Stock 8. Notice the intricate bright gas swirls and dark dust lanes caused by the stellar winds interacting with the hydrogen gas. It is interesting that the space between these two objects appears black and relatively free of gas and dust.
