Description

M1 The Crab Nebula (SN 1054) is a supernova remnant in the constellation of Taurus. The supernova was recorded in 1054 by Chinese, Japanese and Islamic astronomers, when it was brighter than Venus and visible during the day. It is a also a bright object in the radio spectrum, with strong gamma radiation emitted by a fast spinning neutron star.

Because of this nebula, Charles Messier created his now famous list of objects to avoid when looking for comets. In 1758 he was looking for the return of Halley's comet and confused it with the Crab Nebula. M1 became the first object in the Messier Catalogue!

Due to the poor UK weather, I've been going back over old data to see what can be salvaged with better processing techniques. This one was taken nearly 3 years ago with an unmodified Canon DSLR.

Clear skies!

Tony.
