Description

This image shows the dark nebulae LDN 1355 and LDN 1357 (also commonly known together the "Helping Hand" nebula).  LDN 1355 forms the palm and LDN 1357 forms the forward fingers. Also included in the image is vdB 8, vdB 9, and vdB 7 (from left to right across the image). This image is in a region of space called the "Zone of Avoidance" where Milky Way interstellar medium obscures light from further galaxies. Several of these galaxies can be seen (though somewhat obscurely). These galaxies Have catalog designations form the ZOAG catalog.  These objects and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image.
