Description

Sh2 -106 is a visible emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. Its most obvious characteristic is its markedly bipolar shape, to the point that at the time of its discovery in 1946, it was confused with a planetary nebula.
The center of the nebula houses a very young, high-mass star surrounded by a disk of dust; The radiation from this star ionizes the gas in its vicinity, while more remote regions simply reflect its light. A short distance from the central region is a very young cluster of low-mass protostars, which shows that various star formation phenomena are active in the area. The most accepted estimate of the cloud's distance is about 1950 years.
