Description

Wiki : Sh2-96 is an emission nebula visible in the constellation Cygnus1.

It is located approximately 2.5° north of the famous double optic Albireo (β Cygni), a magnitude 3 star also visible from urbanized areas. It appears as a series of weak filaments, difficult to identify and photograph without the aid of filters. The best time to observe it in the evening sky is from June to December, especially from boreal regions.

Sh2-96 constitutes the northernmost extremity of the supernova remnant G65.2+5.7, located approximately 800 pc (∼2,610 ly) from the Solar System in a galactic region rich in dense molecular clouds, among which the well known Great Rift, very extensive. The progenitor star that exploded as a supernova was located about 80 pc (∼261 ly) north of the galactic plane and generated a superbubble extending over about 180 pc (∼587 ly)2
