Description

The Ring Nebula, also known as Messier 57 (M57) or NGC 6720, is one of the most famous and easily recognizable nebulae in the night sky. Located in the northern constellation of Lyra, and lies about 2,300 light-years away from Earth. The Ring Nebula is primarily composed of ionized hydrogen (H II region), helium, and other trace elements. The ionization is caused by the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the central white dwarf star, which excites the surrounding gas, causing it to emit light.
