      Description

Incredible sprite 😍 above the Castelnaud castle in Dordogne (France) on the night of September 10 to 11, 2023.
Here is a short story of this eventful night :
It's so cloudy that I hesitate to go and photograph the sprites. But I still decide from around 10:00 p.m. because the storm is in the axis of a point of view that I have dreamed of doing with sprites for 3 years. The opportunity is so good, here we go...
Arriving at the site, I chose a first viewpoint which ideally places the castle which is still lit. But I realize after a few dozen minutes that I only see the tops of the elves and the sprites... I'll have to step back because I have no choice... Fortunately, a second viewpoint is possible on a track located a few hundred meters further behind.
However, the clouds are still a little more numerous and the sky is still not very clear. Since the beginning, the cell has gotten even closer but the sky seems to clear a little. A succession of large lightning bolts of more than 100kA follows which reveals a few sprites but it is not very transparent. This gives me time to fine-tune the framing of all my cameras...
I then notice that an intense airglow has set in as I quickly look at the images taken by a camera that is in photo mode. I say to myself that it would be nice if a big sprite appeared above this magnificent castle whose lights have just gone out. By chance, a clearing occurs then a huge flash of light illuminates the sky. A huge sprite then appears on the screen of my atomos. The framing was limited for a 50mm but it is framed. Same on my 3 other cameras.
      Bingo, I'm so happy 😀
So I present to you here, the version made in video mode with the A7sII and the Sigma 50mm F1.4. The sprite stands out very well despite the excess light from the lightning flash.
My other photo mode setup took this same scene but the sprite is less detailed. However, the glow of the white flash is erased by the intense glow of the air. The atmosphere of this photo is magnificent. You will see her soon 🙂
Then I take a look at the setup equipped with the sigma 105mm. Whoooo, it's almost well framed... but this type of sprite without a body is a little less photogenic. Well, we're not going to complain 😁 It seems to me that I have never taken a sprite with the 105mm so ready. The relative thunderbolt fell about 196km from me at 1h33min52sec LT. Looking forward to showing you the other versions of this sprite which will stay in my memory.

      Je n'en reviens pas... 🤩
