Description

First picture of 2025 (actually, started in November 2024), returning to shoot objects located in the South after about two years of shooting in the North. I've wanted to take this photo for a long time and the persistence of clear weather in my area between the days before Christmas and New Year helped a lot in completing it.
This is the Boogeyman Nebula (LDN1622) which can be identified in the constellation of Orion just to the left of the much more famous Casper Nebula (M78), beyond Barnard's Loop.

LDN1622 (also known as Boogeyman Nebula due to both its shape and its dark color) is a beautiful region located in the Orion molecular cloud complex that lies roughly 500 light years away from Earth. That is rather close when compared to the nearby famous Orion nebula which is three times further away at 1500 light years.
LDN1622 is a small area of dark and reflection nebula only about 10 light years wide and it is just its relative close proximity makes it appear large relative to the other more distant nebulae in the region.
