Description

This simple shot has taken me two years of frustration to get right. Too amateur to know better, I spent most of that time operating with a broken scope. Replacing it with an identical scope copy, I still struggled. With the last scope not working properly, it made learning collimation next to impossible. I didn't know what "correct" looked like, So, basically, I was learning collimation for the first time a year and a half into my journey. I've received some great advice along the way. A lot of it has involved being told to get a better scope and stop making things difficult on myself. But I can be pretty determined. Others might call it stubborn. Semantics, right?
As a DSO imager, I know nothing about planetary imaging aside from the basics of acquisition. But one of the things I love about my Meade SN8 is its versatility. Not many people can image Andromeda and The Great Red Spot of Jupiter with the same scope. For two years, I couldn't either. That's what makes this shot so great for me. For two years, I've pointed my scope at the moon with a 3x barlow, For two years, I've tried to focus in on the Apollo 11 landing site. For two years, all I wanted was to resolve the large Armstrong crater near the site. And for two years, I've failed miserably. But, most importantly, for two years, I never stopped trying. I never gave up. And after two years, I was able to capture not just the Armstrong crater, but all three of the craters named after the men who changed world history.
I know it's not a jaw dropping shot. It's not going to win any award or even be a blip on the radar for IOTD or Top Pick. But that's only because they don't give those out for perseverance. That's fine. The fact that I was able to take this image at all will serve as my trophy.
