Description

The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy or M83 (discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1752) is located in Hydra at around 15 million km. It spans around 40000 ly and it is a member of a group of galaxy that includes Centaurus A (source : Wikipedia and APOD).

I wanted to test the Telescope live system (pretty popular these days) during these cloudy days at home, so I downloaded a set of already calibrated files of the Southern Pinwheel. It proved to be a good processing exercise with very good quality data produced by the 24" CDK at a 0.6 arcsec/px, hopefully it will be useful for my Northern Pinwheel project started in my backyard. I feel I made some progress with galaxy processing in Pixinsight after multiple experiments. The galaxy has a nice spiral structure, with dark filaments rising above the galactic plane and a faint periphery. The core has trifid structure (better seen in RGB) that was tricky to preserve during various intensity treatement from deconvolution to non-linear.
