Description

M57, the Ring Nebula in Lyra, is a planetary nebula about 790 pc away. The central star is a post-AGB/young white dwarf object. Longer exposures show the recombining AGB wind surrounding the bright central shell. Spectroscopic observations by O'Dell et al. (2007) allowed them to reconstruct the 3D structure of the nebula. It appears to be bipolar, with the pole almost along the line of sight and an equatorial density enhancement almost in the plane of the sky. If  These nebulae can achieve shapes like this through the interaction of the ejected stellar envelope with a previous common envelope outflow; my colleagues Guillermo Garcia-Segura, Ronald Taam, and I have used hydrodynamical simulations to study the physical mechanisms behind this shaping in a series of papers over the past four years.

It's a fun, if small, nebula, and relatively easy to find. I would often go back to it in high school with my little 3" Newtonian. Eventually I'll go for more exposure to try to catch the fainter nebulosity. I did catch the little photo-bomb galaxy IC 1296!

A total of 71 minutes L, 56 minutes R, and 26 minutes each in G and B, with 15-60 second frames taken on 2019/09/16, 2020/09/25, 2020/10/07, and 2022/08/31. All but the last with the ASI 183 camera; the last is with the ASI 294 camera. All binning 1x1.
