Description

Another image from the distant past....
I used the 2-metre Faulkes Telescope North on Maui, Hawaii, to create this  four-pane mosaic of M27, the Dumbbell Nebula. The original observing run was on 11-06-2008 and consisted of three 75-second Ha and three 90-second OIII and H-beta exposures per pane. If I've worked out out properly this equates to about 51 minutes total exposure time.
As mentioned in an earlier post, the FTs didn't have autoguiders back then so exposure times had to be kept very short. Some trailing is evident in parts of the image. The native field of view of this telescope was a mere 5-arcminutes, hence the need for a mosaic. I used an early version of The Sky planetarium software to work out the RA and DEC coordinates for each of the panes and the telescope pointed quite well.
I've reprocessed the original data for this version. The original image was used as a NASA APOD on 26-06-2008.
