Description

NGC 2438 (PK 231+4.2) is a planetary nebula about 3,000 light-years away in the constellation Puppis. It was discovered by William Herschel on March 19, 1786. NGC 2438 appears to lie within the cluster M46, but it is most likely unrelated since it does not share the cluster's radial velocity.

On this image seen another interesting object in the form of a reddish receptacle, located to the left (almost nine hours) of NGC 2438.

The Calabash Nebula (also known as the Rotten Egg Nebula and OH231.8+4.2) is a planetary nebula with a width of about 1.4 light-years and located at a distance of about 5000 light-years from Earth. This nebula is likely to turn into a complete bipolar planetary nebula over the next 1000 years.
