Description

More wonderful data from the Moana Project, generously made available to the public by @blackrig.

M57, the "Ring" nebula, is one of the better-known planetary nebulae, and is located 2000 light-years away in the Lyra region. While the central ring is about a light-year in diameter, it is extremely small in the FOV of my own telescope. MOANA reveals much more detail, and fainter nebulosity as well.

This image was an adventure to process: I drizzled at 2x and applied BlurXterminator aggressively to try and coax as much detail as I could (this is a very tight crop of the full FOV) but the most challenging part was figuring out how to combine the RGB & narrowband channels. I tried a number of different approaches before settling on the NBRGB Combination script using linear data for all channels and then stretching & continuing to process. I used Pixelmath to blend RGB-only data back in for the background galaxies, including the beautiful IC 1296.

As always, many thanks to @blackrig for the detailed, clean data. Thank you all for having a look at my image, and clear skies!
