Description

The Dumbbell Nebula, also known as Messier 27 or NGC 6853, is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Vulpecula. It was first discovered by Charles Messier in 1764 and is one of the most popular and easily observable objects in the night sky. The nebula gets its name from its shape, resembling a dumbbell or hourglass. The Dumbbell Nebula is a result of a dying star, a red giant, shedding its outer layers of gas and dust into space. The central star, visible at the center of the nebula, is a white dwarf, which is the remnant core of the original star. This white dwarf emits intense ultraviolet radiation, which causes the surrounding gas to glow brightly. The nebula is approximately 1,200 light-years away from Earth and has a size of about 3 light-years across. Its distinctive shape is believed to be a result of fast stellar winds sweeping the expelled material into the characteristic dumbbell shape.
