Description

The Vela Supernova remnant is located in the constellation Vela in the Southern Skies. It is the remnant of a SN explosion some 11000 years ago in a distance of only 900 LJ - and therefore intensively studied. The entire ionization area expanded meanwhile to about 40 parsecs size - rather large but still one can clearly see the shock fronts of the event. The resulting pulsar rotates with about 11c/sec. The denomination XYZ origins in the original finding of three radio sources (Vela - X, Y, Z) within that area which later were closely analyzed and assigned to the pulsating star.
