Description

I live in Canada in the province of Quebec, and it's one of the best places to live! However, when it comes to the quality of the sky and the number of nights suitable for astrophotography, we are not very fortunate. It's easier to understand why most astrophotographers opt for shorter exposure times.

I had been dreaming for a long time of capturing a photo with a very long exposure time. While browsing the NGC catalog, I noticed that NGC7023 is at an altitude of more than 40 degrees from May to November, so I thought, why not focus on this target! That's what I did. Every time the sky was suitable, even if it was just for a few hours, I set up my kit, which allowed me to capture a luminance layer and an OSC layer (using 2 telescopes on one mount).

So, from May 17, 2023, to September 23, 2023, I was able to capture hundreds of luminance frames of 300 seconds each and hundreds of OSC frames of 300 seconds each, all over 22 nights! Afterward, I went through hundreds of frames to keep 777 that passed the quality control.

Have you ever stacked 777 frames? I have a state-of-the-art I9 with 32GB of RAM on an SSD, and it took approximately 5 hours! I deliberately processed the stars separately to emphasize the details of the nebula. This allows those who don't like starless images to appreciate my work and brings out the many details of the nebula.

Enjoy the view!
