Description

Me and my wife spent a magic night under the stars on the farm of a good acquaintance of ours near our hometown in Westfalia, Germany. There is a centuries-old family chapel on the property, which served as the foreground for my Perseids photo.  I used my Pentax K3-III without tracking for the photos (300 x 20s). I hadn't expected the northern lights and was very pleased when the red colors appeared in the shot. However, at first I thought they were a strange light pollution effect from the city of Münster.

I used a Sigma 10-20 mm F4.0-5.6 EX DC lens at 10 mm and f/4.0. I actually wanted to use my IRIX 15 mm f/2.4, but I was worried that I wouldn't be able to capture enough Perseids with the narrower field of view. I'm glad I took the Sigma, because with the IRIX I would probably have missed the auroras that were invisible to the naked eye against the light pollution of the city of Münster.
