I went back to this target on the last clear night we had here on June 1st. It has been cloudy since then and looks like the clouds will last a while longer.

I think I got much better images now that I have had some practice with the equipment and software. This revision is from an entirely new set of subs. I tried combining the older sessions with this one but the earlier data just reduced the quality so in the end I decided to just stick with the new set.

I have been experimenting with drizzle in Siril. I don't exactly know what it is or what it does. I've heard recommendations to do it, so I tried it. I can't say whether thats an reason for any improvements in this revision over the earlier one. I think it's mostly due to better quality on the capture side of things.

Title: M 51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy

Description: I went back to this target after improving many of my skills with the equipment and software I used to capture this image. I think this is an improvement. Still working on the stars though. I did not extract the stars to process the galaxy and stars separately. This time I focused on bringing out more detail in the galaxies and didn't worry about the brighter stars so much. They ended up getting cropped out anyway. This is a whole new set of subs. I tried combining these with the earlier set but those just brought down the quality of this new set.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
