Description

Have you ever wondered what you would do if you lived in a part of the world where you could not take pictures of the night sky? Or on another planet where the atmosphere did not allow it? I am finding out how that feels this year. It is the worst forest fire season in Canada's recorded history. So many clear, moonless nights have gone by - ruined by forest fire smoke. Even as I write this on June 27 2023 the air quality is still poor with warnings again for Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal tomorrow. So relentless are the streamers of smoke that all of my projects have lost their momentum. If a clear night does comes along, I can't even remember what I was shooting last session. I have actually started to forget that my scopes are outside... My astrophotographer's brain is devolving into mush...

Normally I would not post a picture of a galaxy with under 4 hours of luminance. But the whale galaxy is nice and bright so it comes across as fairly decent. If you squint, I think you can see Spock mind melding with it.

The alternate version is a look across Burlington Bay June 28 2023 (about 0.5 kilometers of open water) at Hamilton Ontario. It is normally all blue sky and blue water!

Clear (and Smokeless) Skies,
Bob
