Description

Crab Nebula (M1).  I love this target, and I am really pleased with how well the image came out.  Processing it was a thrill because it gave me the opportunity to scrutinize and appreciate this magnificent object.  I was particularly surprised and delighted to see that these extreme colors--the threads and knots of bright reds and greens--are really in there, and didn't require extensive work to draw out.  Imagine our ancestors seeing the origin of this supernova shining bright in the daytime sky in 1054!  I couldn't resist making a few side-by-side comparisons--this 2024 version against my first attempt in 2021; my version against the Hubble Space Telescope's; and, most interesting to me--a comparison of a single frame on a clear night to a single frame on a smokey night (which I eventually discarded).  Clear skies!

(Captured: Celestron C8-XLT, AM5, ASI533MC Pro; Optolong L-Quad Enhance filter; Processed: AstroPixelProcessor, PixInsight, GraXpert, StarXterminator, NoiseXterminator, Blanshan/Cranfield Star Reduction Script)
