Description

Continuing to work through the Caldwell globular clusters, C84 (NGC 5286) is a reasonably bright and compact object in the constellation of Centaurus. Located approximately 35,000 light year from earth, it is one of the oldest globular clusters belonging to the Milky Way. It is thought to be associated with the remnants of dwarf galaxy that collided with our galaxy 8-10 million years ago.

The bright 4.8 magnitude star M Centauri lies only a few arc minutes away, and several nearby 5-6th magnitude stars of contrasting colours complement C84.
