Description

This object is a face-on grand design spiral galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -18 degrees. This galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 100,000 light years.

The beautiful arms of this galaxy extend 270 degrees around the core. It is fascinating to me how each arm splits into two arms about halfway along their length. Many star clusters, dust patches, and HII regions are visible. The dust lanes are odd in that they appear to be so sharply defined and are fairly straight instead of curved.
