Description

I've imaged M27 a few times before over the years but never in a dark sky.  I decided to try it as a target while at Cherry Springs, PA to see if I could capture the outer portions of the expanding gases.  Since I didn't have enough time while at Cherry Springs to go deep enough on the target, I supplemented the data set with subs shot from my back yard (which is in a suburban area).  The result shows some of the outer areas which encourages me to try to get more "dark sky" data at a future outing.

Messier 27, a.k.a.  NGC 6853, the Dumbell Nebula, and the Apple Core Nebula is a planetary nebula located about 1,200 light-years away in the constellation of Vulpecula.  It was the first planetary nebula ever discovered by Charles Messier in 1764.  Based on studies made on its expansion rate, it has been determined that the formation of M27 began about 10,000 years ago.  M27 is a very well known planetary nebula given its brightness, which makes it easy to observe with a small scope.
