Hi,
I just put a deposit down for a GTR today. One of my friends responded with an “Oof” and said they were having issues.
Looking for some ground truthing. If you have a GTR, what has been your experience with the mount?
Regards,
Clint

I've had a Trident GTR for maybe 9 months now. The learning curve if you've never used OnstepX before is pretty steep (I went from an EQ6R to the trident), but once I figured that out I was fine. The performance has been absolutely amazing. It took a long time to ship, and I REALLY got super frustrated learning onstepx stuff, but now that I have it and I live with it every day? no complaints.

I have been using OnStep for ages and I can't find anything particularly challenging with it.

quite good! I'm running on a tripod (not a pier) at the moment so it isnt *as good* as I know it can be, but with the old HD8 setup I was generally getting like .3" RMS. I've got a bigger scope on it now, but havent finished redoing the pointing model / polar alignment.

I've had my GTR Since late last December. It carries a 10" ONTC and the performance has been excellent. On a calm night I average 0.44" RMS. It'll go up to 0.7" when the wind gets between 10-15mph. Haven't had to touch anything physically or in software since the day it was set up, it just works. I couldn't be happier with this mount.

I must admit, I had my name down for one of these mounts, and then heard some things that did not Instill confidence in my decision, so I pulled out, and then thought i would wait for one of the new worm drive mounts they were building, the Minotaur, that was well over 18 months ago and they still have not released anything, I have not read anything anywhere that says that these GTR mounts are anything special, and other than weight capacity, on paper they don’t seem any better than a CEM70, except maybe the encoder versions, my issue is with the company and the poor communication that I got, and the lack of updates, I think that they are falling back into old habits and people are waiting for ever for there mounts, this happened to them a few years back and they got an awful rep because of it.

I've been using the GTR Trident for over a year now, and it strikes a perfect balance between affordability and functionality. I ordered the Minotaur a few months ago. If you have the budget and need for a high-end mount, investing in a model with a five-digit price tag could be worthwhile.
**Communication with the company has been solid. Contrary to claims of unresponsiveness, the owner has been diligent in responding to my WhatsApp messages, even offering support during late-night imaging sessions. I can share the messages to back this up.**
In terms of quality, the difference compared to my CGXL is significant. The Trident isn’t really comparable to worm gear systems; it excels with minimal backlash, low noise, and smooth movements. It's versatile, allowing configurations in both equatorial and Altaz setups. I’m currently optimizing it for the galaxy season, and achieving reliable guiding with long focal lengths is challenging—it truly tests your skills.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my GTR. I've requested an encoder upgrade, as the open-source Onstep controller provides the flexibility to manage speed and track specific targets. 🚀🛰️

Out of curiosity, what does a mount need to have to be considered special to you? It performs on par with premium mounts that cost 2-3x more. I had my 10" on a CEM70 previously and while a great mount isn't even in the same league as the GTR in terms of performance.

Well it seems that everybody gauges a mount by its guiding performance, which is ridiculous really as there are so many variables to guiding well, but if that is the metric people use my CEM70 guides at 0.3 to 0.6 all the time, so than is on par with the GTR, the goto’s are bang on, the mount is not too heavy. It has a nice short counter weight bar, and not a great long thing that would get in my way in my obsy, so IMHO it’s more than on par with the GTR, apart from load capacity, but 30kg is more than I will ever need. So you say the GTR performs on par with premium mounts 2 to 3 times more in cost, I assume you mean mounts like the 10 micron, (which is far better) and the Paramounts, well unless you have ever used a 10 micron, (I have for 6 months) that is on another level to anything that JTW could produce..

To the OP: jump on the JTW Discord!
There you can see real, actual evidence of usage of the mount, how it performs, what people feel about it etc. from actual owners of the mount. Loads of pics of gear, images of targets, details of specs etc.
You can also talk directly to the owner of JTW, ask questions of other owners, see all the other cool things JTW have in the pipeline etc.
I don't own a JTW mount, but I do lurk on their discord and they are a friendly bunch. It does seem to be a boutique mount (think Avalon but even more so) with a focus on engineering quality and features - not on making money...

Sure you may not see much of a difference with a small payload but the GTR wasn't made for small payloads so it's not really a fair comparison. It's kind of like saying Honda is just as good as a Ferrari because they can both reach 65mph lol. The GTR is an observatory grade mount meant for large payloads. It's meant to offer high performance at a lower price than the SB, 10U, and AP mounts. And as some who works with these mounts frequently in observatories I can tell you it succeeds in this. As mentioned before the difference in performance between it and my cem70 with a 10" is night and day and a 10" Newt isn't even considered a large scope. Not in an observatory. Put a 12" RC or a CDK14 on the CEM70 and see if the performance is on par ;)

The comparison to the cem70 is flawed to begin with. In your original post you said you hadn't read anything that suggests the mount special so I'm pointing it out for you. It's the price to performance ratio. It's being able to have a high quality observatory grade mount that can carry large payloads without having to pay premium prices. It's obviously not a mount intended for small payloads so comparing it to a smaller mount meant for smaller payloads doesn't seem very beneficial.

The payload capacity is definitely why I got it. I only had an HD8 on it at first, but it’s got a CDK14 on it now - excited to see how those guiding numbers come out

Steve I really do think this is the place nor the time to be making totally untrue statements about an individual, I have 6 unanswered emails to JTW over the last 18 months enquiring about the Minotaur mount which I was extremely interested in, and was supposed to be released over 12 months ago, so yes they are a bit lacking with responding. I was not bashing JTW just stating facts related to my user case, the GTR would not suit my needs at all, and that’s all i was stating, not bashing the brand as you put it, if by me saying that I don’t see anything special about the mount, is in your eyes bashing the brand, then yea so be it, and as for the subtle threats about me living close and stating that you know where I live, well so you should as I have bought several of your way overpriced second hand good from your website, but if you are meaning that as threat in any way shape or form then you are totally out of Oder but I expect nothing less from you, but please do not threaten me as it may not end well in more ways than one…yes we can both be threatening, but as I said it’s not the time now the place and life is too short to get hung up on threats from little men with big ego’s.. have a nice evening…👍🏻

AstroShed: I must admit, I had my name down for one of these mounts, and then heard some things that did not Instill confidence in my decision, so I pulled out, and then thought i would wait for one of the new worm drive mounts they were building, the Minotaur, that was well over 18 months ago and they still have not released anything, I have not read anything anywhere that says that these GTR mounts are anything special, and other than weight capacity, on paper they don’t seem any better than a CEM70, except maybe the encoder versions, my issue is with the company and the poor communication that I got, and the lack of updates, I think that they are falling back into old habits and people are waiting for ever for there mounts, this happened to them a few years back and they got an awful rep because of it. *** Stuart, in case you do not realize, although I am sure you do as this is a pretty normal post from you over the years to be fair. I am not sure what you get out of lighting the torch paper online but it sure gets tiresome!
1 - Saying a company is not giving decent comms and slipping into old ways is provocative at the very least when you have nothing to base your comment on. 2 - Saying the product is nothing special when you have never used or owned one is also dissing the product
If however, I am totally wrong and this is not what you seem to enjoy doing and for many years you never realized you were indeed supplier bashing companies & their products, then I apologize unreservedly of course.
Steve
An actual owner of a JTW product *** Oh here we go again 😂😂😂, throwing the dummy from the pram…😂😂😂 can’t stand any critique whatsoever…no matter how slight… and BTW if you are going to diss me as a person then at least get my name correct, it’s Stewart not Stuart..👍🏻 Without wanting to get in a pissing contest with you "Stewart" lets first define critique, in order to critique a company and their products, you need to have first-hand knowledge of both
1 comms - it's available on the JTW Discord for all to read that you were a member and all your questions were answered at all times, so your statement is categorically untrue
2 product - you have never even seen let alone used a Trident mount, so you cannot possibly critique a product that you have never used
A have zero problems with you or any genuine critique you may have, in fact I welcome it as it's the only way the mount can improve by users making suggestions etc. However, bashing JTW for no reason but your own amusement and trying to disguise it as critique is simply a horrible thing to do.
Please let this be an end to this now Stewart, as its getting boring fencing with a man who just likes to burn other people without being able to back it up, I know you will answer as its obvious you like to keep threads like this alive, so people see long threads about possible JTW mount issues that are not really there. Perhaps we could even meet up for a beer to discuss it one night seeing as you only live a few miles away from me, I would do anything to put your mind at rest and finally get you to stop grinding this very old rusty axe you have.

I was hoping we could have spoken like adults over some brown foaming liquid but alas that appears not to be the case I did try...

I can tell you know I did just this - upgrade from a CEM70 to a P75 originally, almost 4 years ago now. I was the first in Australia to get a P75 and an early adopter of it. Yeah it took ages to get the mount but when I got it, it blew away all expectations... the courier (UPS) literally dropped the mount and it looked like they had played a game of football with the box! it ended up scuffing the paint on the mount and counterweights.. Mark said that was unacceptable and ended up organising a brand new replacement to me (which was now the GTR!). We decided to test out the P75 and to both of our astonishment it was absolutely perfect, no issues with tracking and it just worked albeit a bit scratched from the courier.. I continued using the P75 for the next year while the first GTR was built and it was just flawless... I gathererd hundreds of hours of data and uploaded to AB. I also opted to pay a bit more and get the 24 bit encoder version of the GTR, because why not The GTR arrived in January 2024 and got plonked on my pier mount in my observatory and have been using it ever since without touching the mount at all - it is just that damn good.. I have 0.3" guiding with my 12" F4 Skywatcher Quattro (1200mm FL) and guide using OAG. Yes Mark had issues many many years ago but these have all been resolved - Mark has admitted over and over again (and constantly apologised) what what happened in the past. I've had zero issues with Mark, as have many other people. His discord support is fantastic - not sure how many other small companies do the amount of work that Mark does but can say now that it wouldn't be many. Cheers, Mike
