Description

I've been fancy with photographing the Arctic Cathedral with aurorae for 11 years now, since i've been after northern lights in Tromsø for the first time. I scouted the area for several times, and thought it is difficult to find a good spot because of all the city and traffic lights.

On September 13, after spending 2 weeks on the Lofoten islands, Andøya and Senja, i returned to Tromsø to catch my flight back home on the next morning. Fortunately, skies were clear, and i spent dusk on top of Storsteinen, a mountain close to Tromsø city which is accessible by a cable car. On Storsteinen, it was so windy and freezing cold, that i decided to leave 1 hour before the last scheduled cable car, early after i captured the first aurorae from the mountain. During the ride, i instantly started regretting my decision, since a strong substorm went off.
However, i was able to get to the Arctic Cathedral in time, and take some good imagery of the polar lights dancing above this beautiful piece of architecture. So, in the end it turned out to be the best decision i made that day.

Polar light: 2.5s f/1.8
