Description

The Cygnus Loop: this project was an absolute BEAST. This summer nebula is a supernova remnant about 2400 light years away and over 120 light years across, with a shockwave flying out from a star that exploded 20,000 years ago, that is exciting this cloud we can see of hydrogen (red) and ionized oxygen (cyan). It’s enormous in the sky: about six whole full moons across(!) this means it’s actually too big to fit in my scope’s field of view.To get around that, this shot is a mosaic—four overlapping panels, two-by-two, with 170 five-minute exposures per panel (14 hours per panel or *56 hours* of shooting) over two weeks. This structure is so big it has three regions that have their own names as if they were their own nebulae: The Eastern Veil or the “Bat Nebula,” the Western Veil or the “Witch’s Broom,” and Pickering’s Triangle. The hard work was in post processing, getting the backgrounds of each panel to match - I goofed a bit and didn’t shoot the panels each night at different times, so certain parts of the sky were done each night low to the horizon through more light pollution (waves fist at the East Valley). After all this I am done with it and ready to not do another mosaic for a while! Monsoon season is inching in and has cut my confidence to leave my gear out overnight, so will be a while for another ambitious project I think. But what a fun one to start my time in Arizona! Loving the clear skies.
