Description

NGC3132 = Caldwell74 = PK272+12.1 is a planetary nebula at a distance of about 2000LJ from Earth with an expansion velocity of about 10miles/sec. it is often called Southern Ringnebula or also Eight Burst Nebula in the constellation Vela. There are 2 central stars - one larger than the other, the larger one is clearly visible and very bright, the other, smaller but hotter one is the reason for the emission nebula, both are White Dwarfs with a temperature over 100k Kelvin. The smaller one is an intensive source of UV radiation which causes the ionized gases in the vicinity to fluoresce and radiate, even in the visible part of the spectrum.
An interesting object, but one needs a very long focal length to get it imaged properly - for this image, that focal length was 6800mm at f/6.8 and only one single session of 4x2x600" for LRGB was acquired. The processing was not too easy but the result is still quite good IMO.
