Description

We were fortunate to live just outside the path of totality and just a couple hour's drive from centerline in the Texas Hill Country. Unfortunately, the weather forecast in our area was terrible, so we decided the Saturday morning before to take a flight to where we would have the best chance of clear skies.

Woke up early to catch a 5:00 AM flight to Boston, picked up a battery to power the telescope, and drove to Maine to stay the night at a hotel 2 hours away from our destination.

We completed our journey at 6:00 AM to Jackman, a small town in Maine with less than 800 people, and set up across the street from the municipal building where an outreach event for the eclipse was being held. Cars started entering town non-stop after 8:30 AM.

Totality arrived around 3:30 PM and was the most incredible sight I've ever seen! The corona appeared misty and extended much further than I expected to see with the unaided eye. Venus, Jupiter, and several bright stars were easily visible and horizon around us looked like a 360 degree sunset.

I read articles before the eclipse that Jackman expected 4,000 visitors to come for the eclipse, but the estimate I saw the next morning was around 10,000 people in this small town of less than 800 people.
