Description

I was too busy on the night of the big G4 geomagnetic Storm to drive any distance from my house, but I did want to try to get a couple of images. I was up on my roof at about 8 pm local time and could see aurora in the EVF even before pressing the shutter, but did not bring the tripod up there. I was then tied up until after 10 pm, so at that point my wife and I drove up the hill near our neighborhood to see how conditions were. No aurora was really naked eye visible but I was able to take the 1st shot shown here to the northwest over the Boulder-Longmont corridor.  There were lots of folks out trying to experience the show. At the time the Moon was making its presence felt behind us.

Later in the early morning I was able to go out again and found a slightly less lighted view more to the direct North. At this point the Moon was somewhat obscured by clouds, and the darker view allowed for a brighter capture. The aurora was still not naked eye visible but the second shot was made at half the shutter speed of the 1st one included in this post.

All in all an amazing experience for just taking a 5 minute drive away from your house!
