Description

M101

Commonly known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101 is about twice the size of our galaxy and is home to an unusual amount of star formation regions. Curiously enough, a supermassive black hole has not yet been observed in the heart of M101, which sets it apart from many other galaxies.

DATA/PROCESSING

The data for this galaxy was provided by the RASC Robotic Telescope, and was imaged in May of 2021. It consists of 5 hours of RGB data, along with 5 hours of luminance. I almost gave up on this one due to giant streaks of light which were impossible to remove without clone-stamping, but the detail revealed in the luminance using BlurXterminator convinced me to keep going, and eventually I cropped out most of the BG streaks. Thanks to recent tutorial videos from PixInsight on processing this same galaxy in HaLRGB, I finally understand how to match my luminance and RGB data to combine them successfully.
